What is Tesla?

    1. What is Tesla?

    Tesla is a company that specializes in electric vehicles, solar energy, and clean energy solutions. They aim to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. Tesla offers a range of electric vehicles as well as solar energy products and solutions for both private and commercial use. They also offer certain models of their vehicles with a federal tax credit up to $7,500. However, the tax credit will reduce to $3,750 for Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive and Model 3 Long Range on Jan 1, 2024.

     

    2. Tesla's Key products and services

    Tesla, Inc. is a multinational automotive and clean energy company that designs, develops, manufactures, and sells a variety of products and services1. Here are some of Tesla’s key products and services:

    1. Electric Vehicles: Tesla produces and sells three fully electric vehicles: the Model S sedan, the Model X sport utility vehicle (SUV), and the Model 3 sedan. They also have the Model Y, Semi, and Cybertruck.
    2. Energy Generation and Storage: Tesla is into designing, developing, manufacturing, and sales of energy storage systems. They produce solar panels and solar shingles for residential and commercial needs. They also install batteries to store clean energy.
    3. Services: Tesla provides after-sales services such as installation and maintenance of energy systems. They also offer services related to charging, insurance, and maintenance of their vehicles.
    4. Subsidiaries: Tesla has several subsidiaries including SolarCity, Maxwell Technologies, Tesla Grohmann Automation, DeepScale, Hibar Systems, and others.

    Tesla’s mission is to create products which help "accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy". They are one of the world’s most valuable companies and, as of 2023, is the world’s most valuable automaker.

     

    3. Tesla's Competitors

    Tesla has several competitors in the electric vehicle and clean energy industry. Here are some of them:

    1. Ford Motor Company: Ford is a multinational automobile manufacturer that is increasing its offerings of hybrid gasoline-electric cars as well as pure electric vehicles.
    2. General Motors: General Motors is another traditional auto giant that is shifting gears towards electric vehicles.
    3. Nissan: Nissan is one of the pioneers in the industry, pushing the boundaries of electric mobility with its innovative approach and commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.
    4. Toyota Motor: Toyota Motor Corporation is emerging in the trailblazing electric vehicle landscape.
    5. BMW: BMW is also shifting towards electric vehicles.
    6. Honda: Honda is another traditional automaker that is increasing its offerings of electric vehicles.
    7. Audi: Audi is a German automobile manufacturer that designs, engineers, produces, markets, and distributes luxury vehicles.
    8. Nio Inc.: Nio is a Chinese automobile manufacturer specializing in designing and developing electric vehicles.
    9. Li Auto Inc.: Li Auto is another leading Chinese EV maker.
    10. Rivian: Rivian is an American electric vehicle automaker and automotive technology company.

    These companies are giving Tesla a run for their money, some even outperforming Tesla in specific areas. The landscape is vast and varied, with both traditional auto giants and up-and-coming startups making waves in the electric vehicle market.

     

    4. History of Tesla

    Tesla, Inc., an electric vehicle manufacturer and clean energy company, was founded in San Carlos, California in 2003 by American entrepreneurs Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. The company is named after Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla.

    Elon Musk was a notable source of funding and became an executive at the company. Ian Wright and J.B. Straubel joined later, and all five (Eberhard, Tarpenning, Wright, Musk, and Straubel) are considered co-founders.

    Tesla’s first vehicle, the Roadster, was inspired by the AC Propulsion tzero. Eberhard wanted to build “a car manufacturer that is also a technology company”, with its core technologies as "the battery, the computer software, and the proprietary motor".

    Tesla’s long-term strategic goal was to create affordable mass-market electric vehicles. They started with a premium sports car aimed at early adopters and then moved into more mainstream vehicles, including sedans and affordable compacts.

    As of the end of 2021, Tesla’s cumulative global vehicle sales totaled 2.3 million units. As of 2023, Tesla is one of the world’s most valuable companies and is the world’s most valuable automaker.

     

    5. The CEO of Tesla

    The CEO of Tesla is Elon Musk. He co-founded and leads Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company. As the co-founder and CEO of Tesla, Elon leads all product design, engineering, and global manufacturing of the company’s electric vehicles, battery products, and solar energy products. He has been the CEO and director of Tesla Motors as of January 2023.
