What is Costco?

    1. What is Costco?

    Costco is a multinational corporation that operates a chain of membership-only warehouse clubs. It offers a wide range of products and services, including groceries, appliances, electronics, furniture, clothing, jewelry, and more. Costco is known for its low warehouse prices and exclusive benefits for members. You can shop at Costco either online or in-store.     2. The CEO of Costco

    The CEO of Costco is W. Craig Jelinek. He has been the CEO of Costco since 2012, succeeding the company’s founder, James Sinegal. However, Jelinek announced in October 2023 that he would step down as Costco CEO at the end of the year. He is set to be replaced by Ron Vachris, the chief operating officer and president.

     

    3. History of Costco

    Costco’s history dates back to 1976, when Sol Price, a pioneer in warehouse club retailing, opened the first Price Club in San Diego. Costco’s earliest predecessor, Price Club, opened its first store on July 12, 1976, on Morena Boulevard in San Diego, California. It was founded three months earlier by Sol Price and his son, Robert, following a dispute with the new owners of FedMart, Price’s previous membership-only discount store.

    Jeffrey H. Brotman and James D. Sinegal opened the first Costco in Seattle in 1983. The company opened its first warehouse (the chain’s term for its retail outlets) in Seattle in 1983. Through mergers, however, Costco’s corporate history dates back to 1976, when its former competitor Price Club was founded in San Diego, California.

    As of September 2023, Costco has 861 warehouses worldwide: 591 in the United States, 107 in Canada, 40 in Mexico, 33 in Japan, 29 in the United Kingdom, 18 in South Korea, 15 in Australia, 14 in Taiwan, five in China, four in Spain, two in France, and one each in Iceland, New Zealand, and Sweden.
