What is Google?

    1. What is Google?

    Google is a multinational technology company that specializes in Internet-related services and products. These include search engines, online advertising technologies, cloud computing, software, and hardware. Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. It was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University.

     

    2. Google's Key products and services

    Google offers a wide range of products and services. Here are some of Google’s key products and services:

    Web-based products:

    1. Google Search: A web search engine and Google’s core product.
    2. Google Alerts: An email notification service that sends alerts based on chosen search terms whenever it finds new results.
    3. Google Assistant: A virtual assistant.
    4. Google Books: A search engine for books.
    5. Google Dataset Search: Allows searching for datasets in data repositories and local and national government websites.
    6. Google Flights: A search engine for flight tickets.
    7. Google Images: A search engine for images online.
    8. Google Shopping: A search engine to search for products across online shops.
    9. Google Travel: A trip planner service.
    10. Google Videos: A search engine for videos.

    Groupings of articles, creative works, documents, or media:

    19. Google Wallet: A peer-to-peer payments service developed by Google that allows people to send and receive money from a mobile device or desktop computer at no cost to either sender or receiver.
    20. Google Workspace: A suite of cloud computing, productivity and collaboration tools, software and products developed by Google.

     

    3. Google's Competitors

    Google operates in various technology markets, so it has numerous competitors. Here are some of the main competitors of Google:

    1. Microsoft Bing: Bing is the second largest search engine and the main competitor to Google, with 8.2% of the search engine market share worldwide.
    2. Yahoo!: Yahoo! comes third on the list and makes up for 1.6% of the search engine market share worldwide.
    3. Baidu: In countries such as China, where Google is banned from conducting business, the number one search engine is Baidu, which controls about 49% of the country’s market share.
    4. Netflix and Hulu: These streaming services are main competitors to YouTube, which is owned by Google.
    5. Nissan and Tesla: These autonomous car makers are competitors to Waymo, which is Google’s autonomous vehicle project.
    6. Facebook, Amazon, Alibaba, Apple, IBM, and TikTok: These are also considered as Google’s competitors.

    These companies are all part of the “computer and technology” sector and contribute significantly to the semiconductors and computer hardware industries.

     

    4. History of Google

    Google was officially launched in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to market Google Search, which has become the most used web-based search engine. Here is a brief timeline of Google’s history:

    • 1996: Larry Page and Sergey Brin, students at Stanford University in California, developed a search algorithm at first known as “BackRub” with the help of Scott Hassan and Alan Steremberg.
    • 1998: Google was officially launched by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to market Google Search.
    • 2002: The company launched Google News.
    • 2004: Gmail was launched.
    • 2005: Google Maps was launched.
    • 2008: Google Chrome was launched.
    • 2011: The social network known as Google+ was launched (which was shut down in April 2019).
    • 2015: Google became the main subsidiary of the holding company Alphabet Inc.

    The search engine went through many updates in attempts to eradicate search engine optimization. Google has engaged in partnerships with NASA, AOL, Sun Microsystems, News Corporation, Sky UK, and others. The company set up a charitable offshoot, Google.org, in 2005. The name Google is a misspelling of Googol, the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, which was picked to signify that the search engine was intended to provide large quantities of information.

     

    5. The CEO of Google

    The CEO of Google is Sundar Pichai. He is an Indian-born American business executive. Pichai was selected to become the next CEO of Google on August 10, 2015, after previously being appointed Product Chief by CEO Larry Page. He stepped into the new position at the completion of the formation of Alphabet Inc., the new holding company for the Google company family. He is also the CEO of Alphabet Inc.
