What is Amazon?

    1. What is Amazon?

    Amazon is a multinational technology company that focuses on e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence. It is one of the world’s largest online marketplaces, AI assistant providers, and cloud computing platforms. The company was founded by Jeff Bezos in Bellevue, Washington, in July 1994. It started as an online marketplace for books but expanded to sell electronics, software, video games, apparel, furniture, food, toys, and jewelry. Amazon also offers international shipping of some of its products to certain other countries.

     

    2. Amazon's Key products and services

    Amazon offers a wide range of products and services. Here are some of Amazon’s key products and services:

    Retail Goods: Amazon’s product lines include books, DVDs, music CDs, videotapes, software, apparel, baby products, consumer electronics, beauty products, gourmet food, groceries, health and personal-care items, industrial and scientific supplies, kitchen items, jewelry and watches, lawn and garden items, musical instruments, sporting goods, tools, automotive items, and toys/games.

    Amazon Marketplace: Amazon Marketplace is a service launched in November 2000 that lets customers sell used books, CDs, DVDs, and other products alongside new items.

    AmazonFresh: AmazonFresh is a grocery service offering perishable and nonperishable foods.

    Amazon Web Services (AWS): AWS is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud, offering over 200 fully featured services from data centers globally.

    Devices and Services: From Alexa and Echo, Fire TV, Fire Tablets, and more, customers are using devices and services to make their daily lives easier and more enjoyable.

    Delivery and Logistics: Amazon’s Operations and award-winning Customer Service teams are at the heart of Amazon’s mission to be Earth’s most customer-centric company.

    Entertainment: Amazon creates and provides access to world-class entertainment through Amazon Originals, Prime Video, Audible, Twitch, Amazon Music, and more for customers to enjoy.

    Amazon Prime: An Amazon Prime membership comes with much more than fast, free delivery. It includes shopping, entertainment, healthcare, and grocery benefits, plus updates available to members.

     

    3. Amazon's Competitors

    Amazon operates in various technology markets, so it has numerous competitors. Here are some of the main competitors of Amazon:

    1. Alibaba: Alibaba is a major competitor in the global e-commerce market.
    2. eBay: eBay is another massive e-commerce platform that directly competes with Amazon.
    3. Walmart: Walmart is a major competitor in the retail market.
    4. Target: Target is another significant competitor in the retail market.
    5. Netflix: Netflix competes with Amazon Prime Video in the streaming service market.
    6. Disney+: Disney+ is another competitor in the streaming service market.
    7. Microsoft Azure: Microsoft Azure competes with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the cloud computing market.
    8. Google Cloud Platform: Google Cloud Platform is another competitor in the cloud computing market.

    These companies are all part of the “computer and technology” sector and contribute significantly to the semiconductors and computer hardware industries.

     

    4. History of Amazon

    Amazon is an American multinational technology company that focuses on e-commerce, cloud computing, and digital streaming. Here is a brief timeline of Amazon’s history:

    • 1994: Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos from his garage in Bellevue, Washington, on July 5, 1994. Initially an online marketplace for books, it has expanded into a multitude of product categories.
    • 1997: Amazon went public in May 1997.
    • 1998: It began selling music and videos in 1998, and began international operations by acquiring online sellers of books in the United Kingdom and Germany.
    • 1998–2004: Amazon starts to expand its services beyond books. It also starts offering convenience services, such as Free Super Savers Shipping.
    • 2005–2011: Amazon introduced several new services and products, including Kindle (an e-book reader), Amazon Web Services (a cloud computing service), and Amazon Prime (a subscription service offering free two-day shipping on eligible items and access to streaming media).
    • 2015: As of June 30, 2015, Amazon has a global annual revenue of US$86.83 billion and 128,076 employees worldwide.

    Today, Amazon is one of the world’s most valuable brands.

     

    5. The CEO of Amazon

    The CEO of Amazon is Andy Jassy. He took over from Jeff Bezos in July 2021. Before being appointed CEO, Jassy served as the Senior Vice President and later as the CEO of Amazon Web Services from 2003 to 2021.
