Salesforce: History

Salesforce, a global leader in CRM, was founded in 1999 with a vision to be “A World-Class Internet Company for Sales Force Automation.” The founders were Marc Benioff, Parker Harris, Frank Dominguez, and Dave Moellenhoff12. They started working on the first version of Salesforce’s CRM in a rented one-bedroom apartment at 1449 Montgomery Street, on San Francisco’s Telegraph Hill1.

In its first year, the company expanded to 40 employees and an 8,000-square-foot office at the Rincon Center1. Despite challenges brought on by the dot-com bubble bursting, Salesforce officially launched on February 7, 2000, at an event themed around “The End of Software” at San Francisco’s Regency Theater1.

Salesforce grew quickly, making its IPO in 20042. As of September 2022, Salesforce is the 61st largest company in the world by market cap with a value of nearly US$153 billion2. It became the world’s largest enterprise software firm in 20222.

Salesforce’s annual Dreamforce convention, IdeaExchange platform, and acquisitions like Quip, Heroku, MuleSoft, Tableau Software, Acumen Solutions, and Slack Technologies have contributed to its growth2. As of 2023, Salesforce has a revenue of US$ 31.35 billion2.
