The Home Depot: History

The Home Depot was co-founded by Bernard Marcus, Arthur Blank, Ron Brill, Pat Farrah, and Ken Langone in 19781. The founders envisioned a superstore that would offer a huge variety of merchandise at great prices and with a highly trained staff2. With help from investment banker Ken Langone and merchandising guru Pat Farrah, Marcus and Blank opened the first two Home Depot stores in Atlanta the following year2. The stores were built in spaces leased from J. C. Penney that were originally Treasure Island “hypermarket” stores1.

The Home Depot’s proposition was to build home-improvement superstores, larger than any of their competitors’ facilities1. Employees would not only be able to sell, but they would also be able to walk customers at every skill level through most any home repair or improvement2. Soon, The Home Depot began offering DIY clinics, customer workshops and one-on-one sessions with customers2.

On September 22, 1981, The Home Depot went public on the NASDAQ13. After going public, Marcus and Blank made a commitment to give back to the communities where their stores were located2. Today, The Home Depot has grown to more than 2,300 stores in three countries21.

As Marcus says in his and Blank’s book, “Built From Scratch,” “At the end of the day, we’re in the people business.”2
