USA College Basketball: History

College basketball in the USA has a rich history. The sport was created by a physical education teacher named James Naismith in the winter of 1891 at a YMCA International Training School, known today as Springfield College, located in Springfield, Massachusetts1. The first formal basketball game played under Naismith’s rules is generally given as December 21, 18911.

The first known college to field a basketball team against an outside opponent was Vanderbilt University, which played against the local YMCA in Nashville, Tennessee, on February 7, 18931. The second recorded instance of an organized college basketball game was Geneva College’s game against New Brighton YMCA on April 8, 18931.

Basketball began to be played at some college campuses by 18931. The first collegiate game was broadcasted on TV in the U.S. on February 28, 19402.

Today, top-tier basketball is governed by collegiate athletic bodies including the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA)1.

USA College Basketball: Number of Games

In men’s college basketball, teams can compete in a maximum of 25 regular-season games if a team does not participate in a multiple-team event1. If a team does participate in a multiple-team event, they can play 25 regular-season games and one multiple-team event that includes up to two games, or 24 regular-season games and one multiple-team event that includes up to three games1.

However, the total number of games can vary. For example, a men’s Division I college basketball team that makes the NCAA tournament can expect to play 35 to 40 games in a season2. The NCAA record for games played in a season is 41 games, held by UConn’s 2011 national championship team and Michigan’s national runner-up team in 20182. Seventeen teams have played 40 games in a season, most recently Auburn2.

Please note that these numbers can change based on the rules set by the NCAA and other factors. For the most accurate information, it’s best to check the official NCAA website or the websites of the individual colleges and universities.
